First Things First

First Things First

I’m a logical person.  I like to see proof of things.  But let me start right off and say there is no way I or anyone else can prove scientifically that God exists.  Why?  Because He made it that way.  Proverbs 25:2 says, “It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.”

What does that mean?  Well, think about it:  if God is omniscient (i.e., He knows everything), then 1) there are no unanswered questions to Him; and 2) by not revealing everything, He demonstrates His power – glorifying Himself – because He knows when we don’t.  As humans, we have an insatiable desire to know — to be able to answer the question, “Why?”  It is this desire that drives us to learn, to create, to “further” ourselves and our species.  From the verse above, “kings” (i.e., humans) receive glory in having discovered the answer to whatever question they’ve pursued.  We see it every day in the news, in stories about innovative technology creations, medical breakthroughs, etc.  We laud the achievements of people based on how they’ve pioneered their chosen field of study.

God doesn’t work that way.  He doesn’t have to.  He doesn’t need to.  His glory is in Who He is.  What He desires from us is that we would choose Him, by faith.  Why by faith?  Because it forces us to make a choice – to believe in Who He is, or not.

So, the first question you have to ask yourself is, do you believe God exists?  You may not be able to answer why.  That’s ok.  But you have to choose whether you believe.

Now, I started this post by saying I cannot prove scientifically God exists.  While true, I also cannot help but see evidence throughout our world and daily life of His existence.  It truly is everywhere!  Indeed, the Bible says in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”  In other words, look around you!  Where do you think all of this came from?

Ok, you say.  But what about the Big Bang?  Even if that theory is true, it still had to start from something.  A “Big Bang” spontaneously happening?  WhyWhereWhere did that come from?  Who initiated it?  Science cannot answer those questions.

What about Darwinian evolution?  According to that theory, we’re really just a higher-evolved species descended from apes.  Ok, even if you accept this, how did life begin?  Who started it?  Where did that first single-celled organism come from?  Science cannot answer those questions, either.  Evolution theory starts just after life begins.

The more we learn as humans, the more we realize we don’t know.  And for all of mankind’s ability to search out the answers to questions like “why, who, and where,” God glorifies Himself by hiding some of those answers.  He still requires us to choose Him by faith.  To me, it’s a logical choice.
